First of all, let's get a quick refresh on lasers. A LASER (remember in the 80s when we actually wrote it in all caps like it was an acronym: Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation) is one wavelength of light. So, white light is passed through a filter (usually a gas or element or crystal) and the result is one wavelength that is absorbed by a particular target (pigment or water, for example). Thus, aesthetic lasers can be described by either their filter or wavelength. Our favorite laser is our Sciton® erbium laser (2940nm). It is an ablative laser, which means that it vaporizes old skin!
With ablative lasers, there are two basic methods of treating the skin--full field and fractionated. Ablative lasers are fantastic because they create a controlled vaporization of old tissue and force the body to regrow young, fresh skin. Full field treatment is akin to mowing the lawn (take it ALL off!). Since we have the Sciton® TRL (tunable resurfacing laser) we can tune it to very light full field (for a quick weekend glow) to a deep, aggressive resurfacing(once-in-a-lifetime treatment for most) and everything in between. Fractionated(Sciton® ProFrac) is like aerating the lawn: it's lots of little holes in the grass. Because we leave a lot of healthy tissue behind with fractional, we can treat deeper and recovery is faster!
Full field resurfacing is great for lines, wrinkles and uneven texture. Fractionated laser is great for scarring, texture, large pores and laxity. Usually within a week of fractionated treatment skin already feels amazing and makeup goes on smoother! And within a few months, collagen generation begins(the gift that keeps on giving)! And of course, full field and fractionated treatments can be paired for one rockstar procedure. Depends on your desires, needs and lifestyle🤩
