The Fitzpatrick Scale is a skin classification system that scores skin types from I-VI according to amount of pigment and reaction to sun exposure. Your score tells us a few different things from how prone you are to skin cancer (although we should all protect ourselves from the sun!) to your anticipated inflammatory response to aesthetic procedures. Some procedures (such as Botox, fillers and PRX-T33) are safe on all skin types, while others (some chemical peels, microneedling and Plasma Pen) are more likely to cause post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (dark spots following trauma) in skin types IV-VI. Skin types I-II are more likely to get pink and inflamed immediately following treatment, but also usually heal great! While it may be frustrating for skin types V-VI that there are certain procedures they can’t undergo, their skin is also less prone to sun damage, skin cancer and shows less signs of aging, so frankly, the rest of us really don’t want to hear you complain about it. 🤣 Type IVs may undergo skin lightening and/or an inconspicuous test patch prior to treatment.
What does the above mean to ALL of us? ALWAYS protect your skin from the sun, ESPECIALLY following a procedure. Even if you are a skin type I, if you are unprotected in the sun following an inflammatory procedure, you may end up with hyperpigmentation that could make you look worse than before we started! So I’ll do my part and you do yours 😉
