What is KYBELLA®?

KYBELLA® is the trade name for deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule that is injected into fat cells to break them down. It is everyone’s dream: a fat dissolver! KYBELLA® is a type of mesotherapy (which is a generic term). Who is ready to melt some fat?!

What can I expect?

The procedure takes only 15-20 minutes and consists of multiple small injections in the treatment area. Discomfort is minor and generally best treated with only some ice. You will immediately have swelling and perhaps some bruising for a few days. This could be a good time for a cute scarf as generally, you will look worse for a few days before you notice improvement (no pain, no gain, right?).

When will I see results?

You will first notice results in four to six (4-6) weeks, but will usually require a few treatments and therefore, final results will be realized in a few months.

How long do the results last?

The results are permanent.

In what body areas can I get it?

The most common (and FDA-approved) area is the neck, but it is also being used off-label for other areas of unwanted fat, such as that elusive “bra fat”.

What is lipodissolve?

Mesotherapy literally means injection of medication, but it frequently refers to injection of fat cell-destroying medications. Today, we use a medication called PC/DC (phosphatidylcholine/ deoxycholate), which is injected to cause breakdown of fat cells. PC/DC has been used for years for this purpose and is very safe. The pharmaceutical company, Allergan, has taken the deoxycholate from PC/DC and patented deoxycholic acid, which is known as KYBELLA®.

What can I expect?

The area to be treated will be numbed up prior to treatment. You will then be injected in multiple sites (approximately 1 cm apart) with a very small needle. The area will swell immediately and there may be mild aching and/or bruising. You will be noticeably swollen for about one week and then it will progressively decrease over the next four weeks. Most body areas require 3-4 treatments spaced one month apart.

When will I see results?

Results are seen approximately four weeks after each session.

How long do the results last?

The results are permanent as the fat cells are destroyed and reabsorbed by the body.

In what body areas can I get it?

Pretty much any area in which you have stubborn fat: from belly to bra fat and under-eye fat pads to saddlebags.
